Tonight we had dinner at a local Ethiopian restaurant (*yum*) with a couple who is also adopting from Ethiopia. Brad and Nancy are great people who we connected with through a mutual friend. They are 'almost' waiting, and are so anxious to get on the list at the agency they're adopting from. Their agency, Wide Horizons, happens to be the same one that Angelina Jolie adopted through, which has since increased the popularity of the agency and increased the wait times. Fortunately for Nancy and Brad, they are requesting siblings under 5 years old, thus will likely have less of a wait. We joked that maybe we'd get to travel together to pick up our kids. Maybe? Anything is possible at this point. It's strange to be in a place where you are totally at the mercy of others and have no idea what is in store. It's sort of freeing.
It was great to hang out with some people who are going through a lot of the same emotions and experiences as we are. We talked about how we decided on Ethiopia, how the process has gone so far, how our familiies and friends have reacted, what we're doing to prepare (books we're reading, people we're connecting with), attachment (I'll post on that later), and putting together a local Ethiopian adoption family group to meet monthly or bi-monthly.
We had a great time with them. Mark met Brad through Toastmasters a few years ago, but this was my first time meeting Brad or Nancy and we are thankful for the new connection. Now we've met 4 couples in the area who are adopting or have very recently adopted from Ethiopia! Small world.
